Welcome to Autumn 2011
It is now quite some time since our last Newsletter, and it has certainly been a hectic time in the steels industry in the period since then. |
Here is our ‘take’ on the current situation in the industry, details of the
re-structuring and expansion at Reddifast, and another, recent example, of our R & D, Design and Consultancy help.
Read on, and then call me, or email me. Your own views, knowledge and experiences would be especially valued.
Regards,
Rod

Supply and Pricing
The steel mills and processors in the UK and Europe have had a difficult 12 months. Price hikes and hot rolled shortages earlier in the year, were followed by a short period of stability and then, over the last few weeks hot rolled prices have dropped substantially.
As usual, the Carbon Steel Spring Grade prices have not been reduced yet following the last hike in July, which itself was the fourth increase in less than 12 months. The rolling mills are always slow to change spring steel strip prices, arguing that the spring steel specification is so demanding and that the process route is very much longer than with most other steels.
We are arguing the case for reducing prices on spring grades and the recent fall-off in orders in the EU countries should now force the issue, we hope!
The recent good results in the Automotive sector have now hit the news and it was great to hear that sales of Jaguar and Land Rover are climbing. Within the last few weeks we have also been advised that Nissan are ramping up their schedules for the last quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012.

Reddifast restructure brings even better support
As most of our customers will know, through regular contact with our sales, management and accounts team, there have been some exciting recent developments.
The team has been re-structured to reflect the changes in our business, creating new roles and re-defining how we can best react to supporting our customers, particularly through creating defined Product Manager roles.
Coleen Silwood has joined as our new Accounts Manager and has settled in very quickly. She is already making an impact with system developments, and we look forward to a long and mutually beneficial career with us.
Vicky Plant remains as supremo on the Slit, Strip and Allied Products, where her production planning and costing skills have been so invaluable to us and our customers.
Michelle Horton is Product Manager for Spring Wire and Spring Steel Barriers. Her importing skills are of the highest order, and she has recently completed a challenging product and sales training course on Spring Steel Barriers with flying colours. Michelle really is multi-functional, and a real asset.
Laura Smith is our new Customer Co-ordinator. A new ‘hot-seat,’ ensuring enquiries and queries from customers, suppliers and sub-contractors are handled coolly and quickly.
She has become a big hit, particularly with her knowledge of steel specifications. If new specs are required Laura has access to worldwide databases, and the knowledge to interrogate them and come up with the right spec for the right job in double-quick time.

Headphones Help
Once more Reddifast’s expertise and advice has proved invaluable in another fascinating project.
| Sussex University’s world renowned Innovation Centre commissioned Reddifast to advise on material for a new headphone design. The headphone’s neck band needed a design change to provide an acceptable tension to the user’s ears. We were commissioned to to advise on material for
the prototypes and to help achieve lower manufacturing costs. |

The Temper Rolled Stainless Steel solution recommended, and supplied, by Reddifast is proving to be exactly what the client was looking for.
