Welcome to Summer 2010
The post-Election reality begins to bite as we issue this Summer Newsletter.
The economic shift from an inflated public sector to a growth in employment in manufacturing is promising, and long awaited. |
Whilst we hope the new coalition keeps to its promise of prioritising the de-regulation of manufacturing, by far the greater issue is the Banks and the Credit Insurers. We know ourselves how much this is impacting on our industry, and indeed, holding us all back.
There is also now a contrived International steel shortage, itself causing mayhem on supply, ordering, and of course, price.
Reddifast is finding ways to alleviate this effect for its customers and you can read more about this below.
As ever, your thoughts, reactions and observations would be particularly welcome, and valued, at this crucial time for our industry

Supply and Pricing
Our industry now, more than ever, needs supply and cost certainty.
There are continued, unnecessary steel shortages. The European blast furnaces are being closed for lengthy periods, largely to ensure that the high prices on hot rolled wide coil and other products, including narrow strip, are maintained.
Coupled with world-wide control of steel production from the basic iron ore to hot and cold rolling, no consideration is being given to European markets, let alone the effect on our own UK markets.
The Nickel Surcharge rises on spring wire are outrageous and are stifling the growth which we had all seen in recent months. In May 2009 the surcharge was £648 per tonne. By last month, June 2010 this had risen to £2100 per tonne, a massive 324% increase.
Reddifast is responding by offering certainty of supply and pricing for its wire customers, through a commitment to an agreed fixed price on a ‘supply to scheduled orders only’ policy.
The material price AND the Nickel Surcharge will be held from the order date through the complete forward order schedule. There will be no monthly application of increasing UK Nickel Supply surcharges.
I would particularly appreciate your feedback on these subjects, at what is such a crucial time for our industry. Let me know here

Visit to Indian Mills
Rod Laight, Managing Director of Reddifast Steels Ltd is leading a small group on a visit to India in November this year.
 |
The group will visit a number of mills, including that of Raajratna Metal Industries Ltd at Gandhinagar in Gujurat.
We shall have the opportunity to inspect Raajratna’s state-of-the-art wire drawing operation. |

We would hope to include a report on the visit in our end-of-year newsletter.

Steaming Ahead
The utterly fascinating world of steam engines.
Jonathan White, ‘Owner and Enthusiast’, chose Reddifast when he needed some specialist spring steel when renovating the Pickering Governor on his Burrell 3665 general purpose steam engine.
 |
The governor is the device of three spinning balls on top of the boiler, which intrigues all those, young and old, who have seen these amazing engines.
Their vital and crucial role is to regulate the speed of the engine to restrict or increase the flow of steam from the boiler to the engine. |
Reddifast supplies the spring steel which directly holds each of the three balls as they spin so fast and critically. The material supplied is a speciality pre-hardened and tempered spring steel, 1.5mm thick, and 31mm wide, in lengths of 2metres.
